I-43 Rock Freeway Project Between Bowers Road and WIS 83
Greetings from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT),
WisDOT is beginning a pavement replacement and improvement project along approximately 9.8 miles of the I-43 Rock Freeway between Bowers Road and WIS 83 in Waukesha and Walworth counties, with completion anticipated in summer 2029. Initial work beginning this fall is limited to project preparation activities, including construction of temporary emergency pullouts and temporary lane and ramp widening. Major construction operations, including pavement replacement and bridge improvements, are scheduled to begin in spring 2027.
Please see the attached project overview for additional details. As the project moves forward, updated information will also be available on the project website: https://projects.hub.
What to expect in 2026
- Preparation work is scheduled to begin the week of October 5.
- Traffic impacts this year will primarily consist of periodic overnight lane and ramp closures within the project limits.
- Long-term lane closures associated with major construction will not begin until spring 2027.
The schedule is subject to change. We encourage you to check 511wi.gov for roadway conditions before you go.
The project team appreciates your patience and cooperation as we move forward with improvements to the I-43 Rock Freeway corridor
